The 100M Death March takes it's name in commemoration of the Carolean Death March.
The 100-mile distance represents the ultimate ultra-challenge in Mid Norway! The race starts and finishes at Teveltunet. The first 63 kilometers of the course traverse beautiful trails and explore a rich cultural landscape on the south side of highway E14. Beyond this, runners merge onto the 100K trail from Meråker and continue on the north side of E14.
The only drop bag will be made available at the camp school close to Nøstmo after just over 90 km. Support is only allowed at the following checkpoints (available by car): Kluksdalen, Gilså, Meråker vgs., Ospbakken and the camp school close to Nøstmo. This rule is to avoid major disadvantages for those who don't have any support.
The runners should take special note about long stretches without aid stations. For instance the 30 km stretch between Kluksdalen (11 km) and Gilså (41 km). Note that the last 70 km after the drop bag are the most challenging with 4000 meters of ascent and lot's of marshy terrain. Be sure to have enough food in your pack to last between the four food stations at Storsjøhøgda, Rundfjellet, Angeltjønn cabin and Huva.
The trail is available on Trace-de-Trail (click map and elevation profile above) and as gpx file from the download area. The course is also available on Garmin Connect:
Note: A GPS device, with the proper gpx file uploaded, is mandatory for participants in the 100M.
Course Description
The MMC 100M starts at Teveltunet, 450 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.). The course circles the entire municipality and is one of the most spectacular ultra-running experiences Trøndelag has to offer.
The initial stretch, a little over 60 kilometers, is on the south side of E14, beginning at Teveltunet, 450 m.a.s.l., and continuing to Meråker Upper Secondary School, 100 m.a.s.l. This segment of the course is a gentle start, with only 1250 meters of elevation gain and a net descent of 350 meters. It features much runnable terrain, where runners can enjoy beautiful mountain landscapes and cultural scenery. Only one thousand-meter peak needs to be crossed in this section, which is the lowest 1000-meter peak in Meråker - Blåhåmmårkleppen at 1007 m.a.s.l.
From Meråker vgs, the course follows the 100 km route, and you can find the course description for this section on the information page for the 100K race.
0-10 km red-marked DNT trail, heading south:
The start is at Teveltunet, with an initial loop on the gravel roads around Teveltunet and Rypetoppen before entering the the Norwegian Trekking Organization (DNT) trail towards Kluksdalen. DNT mark their routes with red paint, normaly a red 'T', and that is why they are said to be 'red-marked'.
The course begins in forest and mountain terrain, including some marshy areas. The first 8 km are hilly, with gentle ascents and some short steeper slopes. The highest point is at 720 m.a.s.l. after approximately 7 km.
10-20 km red-marked DNT trail, heading south:
The first aid station is at Kluksdalen (520 m.a.s.l.) after about 11 km. This is a full aid station with food.
After Kluksdalen, the trail passes through a 5-6 km long marshy section with occasionally firmer ground. Following this, the terrain transitions to mountainous terrain with alternating mountain and marshy areas. The highest part of the course here is Klukskaftet at 900 m.a.s.l. after roughly 18 km.
20-37 km:
Beyond Klukskaftet and up to the next checkpoint, the course continues along the red-marked trail in relatively flat terrain at 900 meters elevation. Checkpoint at the trail crossing after 21 km.
From the checkpoint the course does a loop of approximately 3.5 km: First, the course heads southeast along the red-marked trail (direction Storerikvollen) for 500 meters before turning south up to Meråker’s lowest 1000-meter peak, Blåhåmmårkleppen (unmanned checkpoint). Here, the view can be enjoyed, and with good visibility, you can see the next 20 km of the coarse to the northwest in this amazing mountain area. Descent from Blåhåmmårkleppen is steep toward north, back to the checkpoint at the trail crossing.
Now the trail reenters the red-marked DNT trail and follows it in the north-west direction all the way to Bjørneggen at 600 m.a.s.l. This segment in Hårrådalen features easy-to-run, dry moraine terrain with a few marshy areas and short slopes. Bjørneggen is a self-service DNT cabin, and by the time you reach this point, you will have completed 37 km.
37-63 km gravel road and old mine road:
This section starts with a gravel road to the mining community of Gilså at 530 m.a.s.l., which is a checkpoint and aid station reached after about 41 km. From Gilså, the course enters a short marshy section of 500 m and continues north/north-west along the old mine road called Gamle Stordalsvei. This is an old forest road/path that is easy to run and completely free of steep ascents.
From 53-61 km, the coarse follows gravel roads into Meråker center and Meråker vgs at 100 m.a.s.l. (63 km). Aid station with food, indoors shelterand toilets. Please note that there is no drop bag here - the only drop bag is at the camp school close to Nøstmo after 93 km.
