Mandatory equipment for MMC 70K, 100K and 100M
The following text describes the mandatory gear for all distances above 42K. For 42K and shorter distances – see separate section. The list with mandatory gear also includes additional recommendations and explanations in blue.
- The runner must carry the mandatory gear in a running pack for the duration of the whole race and the runner may not change the running pack during the race
- Smartphone
- The smartphone must work in Norway
- The safety phone numbers must be saved on the phone (preferably on speed dial)
- It is not allowed to mask/block the phone's number
- Always keep the phone on and connected and with audible notification during the race
- The “Hjelp 113” app must be installed and activated with localization services (the app is available for iPhone and Android)
- A map app must be installed, with a localization feature to show the current location. Alternatively, the runner can use a handheld GPS navigation device (or GPS watch). For the 100M distance it is mandatory to have a GPS device with the relevant gpx file preloaded so the runner can use this to get back on track if necessary. This function is also recommended (but not mandatory) for the 100K and 70K distances. The trails should be well marked, but in fog and bad weather with severely reduced visibility it is easy to take a wrong turn and get lost.
- The phone must have adequate battery to function at least until the final cut-off time for the race. Do not forget to fully charge the phone’s battery before start. Tip: You can turn off wi-fi and bluetooth on your phone to save battery drainage. Do not put the phone on flight mode or silent mode, as the organizer must be able to reach you by phone if necessary.
- Note: The runner must be reachable by phone at their specified number at any time 24 hours before, during and for 24 hours after the race.
- A working lamp (headlamp, waist lamp or smilar) with adequate battery to last for at least 6 hours (12 hours for the 100M race), with a recommendation of 200 lumens or more
- Spare batteries / power banks are required if the phone and/or lamp have insufficient capacity
Note: Spare batteries and power banks are allowed in drop bag (note that drop bags may not be an option for all distances) - Minimum water supply of one litre
- A food reserve of minimum 0,5 kJ or 120 kcal (recommended 2 kJ / 480 kcal)
Note: It is the runner’s responsibility to be self-sustained with food, apart from what is available at the aid stations, and the food reserve shall be in addition to this - Survival blanket. Even better is a survival bivuac, which doesn't weigh much more that a blanket.
- Whistle (to attract attention in emergency situations)
- Additional warm second layer top with long sleeves (excluding cotton), recommended in wool
- Wind jacket with hood
Cold Weather Kit (CWK)
When the weather forecast indicates a possibility for adverse weather, the runners could be notified about additional requirements, including some of or all the following items:
- Waterproof jacket with hood
- Leg cover – one of the following:
i. Full coverage of the legs, without requirements for wind- or waterproofing
(for instance long legged pants, leggings combined with stockings and shorts, long stockings and knee-long shorts or other combinations)
ii. Windproof overpants
iii. Waterproof overpants - Waterproof gloves, or ordinary gloves with rain cover
- Hat, bandana, buff or similar
- A third warm layer (fleece jacket, down jacket or similar) to be worn between second warm layer and rain jacket
A combination of these items will be refered to as a 'Cold Weather Kit', or CWK for short.
Hot Weather Kit (HWK)
There are currently no specific mandatory items in the hot weather kit. In case of very warm and sunny weather the runner must take precautions as necessary. This may include a larger water reserve and extra sun protection.
